Gloss is not a particular aesthetic, nor is it synonymous with mainstream culture, urban life or capitalism. It is a surface of value produced through repetition: symbols, tastes, identities and lifestyles become increasingly naturalised through collective recognition, cultural structures and algorithmic visibility.

In the attention economy, visibility and value are difficult to separate. Algorithms do not need to tell us what to like. By repeatedly amplifying particular images, behaviours and identities, they establish the references through which judgement is made.

This process is not limited to the mainstream. Underground and countercultural scenes can generate their own codes, status systems and forms of cultural capital. Once a sound, style or attitude becomes a condition of belonging, opposition itself can become another reproducible Gloss.

For this reason, DE-GLOSS does not oppose one culture with another, nor does it romanticise the underground as a space outside discipline.

Instead, it interrupts the automatic relation between symbol and value.

An order is first constructed so that it can be perceived and relied upon. Its internal relations are then displaced, interrupted or destabilised. Finally, the remaining material is reorganised into another structure.

Reconstruction is not restoration.

In sound and live performance, this develops into Attention Occupation: the deliberate construction of a perceptual field capable of interrupting existing hierarchies of attention and reorganising the listener’s perceptual order.

DE-GLOSS does not search for a truth beneath the surface. It attempts to reopen the possibility of judgement, selection and construction.
